Summary: Chronicles the history of New York from the discovery of its vast protected harbor by Henry Hudson in 1609 through George Washington's triumphant return to the city at the end of the American Revolution in 1783. Explains that the first settlers, sent by the Dutch West India Company, were sent not to guarantee themselves religious freedom, but to make money harvesting animal furs. Chronicles post-revolution New York, and how Alexander Hamilton, DeWitt Clinton, and others made it one of the fastest-growing and most important cities in the world.
