Summary: A signal officer and staff captain in World War I, Commander of the 1st Canadian Corps in Italy in World War II, Lieutenant-General Burns is uniquely qulified to comment on the conduct of the wards and to compare the strategy employed in each. His subsequent experience as Commander of the U.N. forces in the Middle East as delegate to the Disarment Committee have given him the perspective with which to evaluate his observations. As a consquence, his was memoirs - the first ever written by a Canadian general - make an important contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the period.
